Neglect occurs when caregivers doesn’t give adequate care to a senior, either actively—by withholding necessities—or passively—by being unable to fulfill their responsibilities because of illness, inadequate skills, substance abuse or mental health problems, or lack of time or energy.

- Absence of food, water, heat or ventilation
- Unsafe living conditions, including uncleanliness
- Animal or insect infestations
- Signs of medical mismanagement, including empty or unmarked bottles of outdated prescriptions
- Poor personal hygiene

- Absence of needed dentures, eyeglasses, hearing aids, walkers or wheelchairs
- Emotional distress such as crying or depression
- Nightmares or difficulty sleeping
- Sudden loss of appetite
- Confusion and disorientation, which may be the result of malnutrition
